    Abstract [en]

This article examines the use made by heritage tourism of fiction, authenticity and historical knowledge with a view to augmenting interest in the Västergötland heritage. It takes as its starting point Jan Guillous story of the medieval Knight Templar Arn Magnusson. The series of Arn novels was published between 1998 and 2001, and two feature films were made in 2007 and 2008. Research in recent decades has clearly shown the medieval period to have been one of extensive international contacts and influences, a point which Gulliou highlights. One might therefore expect heritage tourism surrounding Arn to have been informed by narratives concerning the multicultural society of the Middle Ages. The present article investigates this aspect, or which stories have recieved prominence in heritage tourism and which have been rejected. The article shows how authenticity has been used in these connections. The source material is based on the websites of seven tourism providers, and the marketing of Arn-related tourism has been studied at two points of time, namely 2009 and 2011/2012. The article also discusses the use of history and how historically related tourism hepls to shape out view of history.

Marketed Arn tourism changed between 2009 and 2012, through the cutting back of experience-based authenticity in defence to a more object-based authenticity linked mainly to churches and monastic ruins. These historical remains, however, have not been used in heritage tourism as a means of describing the medieval network of international contacts, despite the pivotal role played by both churches and monasticism in these connections. As a result, the picture conveyed is founded on simplified stereotypes and affords a limited, partly inaccurate portrayal of medieval society. International influences and networks in that society could be used by heritage tourism for describing the dynamics of the medieval period, while at the same time indicating that societies have always been changed and developed under the impact of new influences.

    Konflikten i Sko kloster 1432: en sällsynt inblick i en sluten värld2017In: Fornvännen, ISSN 0015-7813, E-ISSN 1404-9430, p. 101-110Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Cistercian order had some problems with the lifestyle of its monks or nuns andwith the upkeep of monastic seclusion. A major issue was that a monastery couldbecome subordinate to the local bishop. The earliest cases concern nunneries. Aconflict in Sko nunnery in Uppland in 1432 is known through a collection of testi-monies gathered by clergymen and members of the king’s council. The document, previously unpublished, is here presented in an edition with comments.Prioress Katarina Konradsdotter was accused of verbal and physical abuse andof countermanding orders from the abbess. Five nuns were her accomplices: thegroup was opposed to the nunnery being subordinate to the archbishop instead ofbeing under “rules of the monks”. It was decided that the prioress and her follow-ers were to move to Vårfruberga nunnery, 50 kilometres away.

Gender, Work, and the Fiscal-Military State2017In: Making a Living, Making a Difference: Gender and work in early modern European society / [ed] Maria Ågren, New York: Oxford University Press , 2017Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In contrast to the early twentieth century, when marriage could set an end to women’s working lives, early modern society was based on the fundamental necessity of married women’s work. This chapter looks at one part of the labor market where this was particularly salient: state service. The new states of Europe created a market in male labor and new career opportunities for men. States were, however, just as dependent on women’s work, both for their households and directly for the state. Looking at men’s and women’s work in four state-run sectors (the customs administration, the army, large-scale production units, and midwifery), this chapter explores the ways in which state formation, commercialization, and people’s everyday lives were entangled.

Interdependent living: Labouring families and the Swedish mining industry in the late seventeenth century2017In: The History of the Family, ISSN 1081-602X, E-ISSN 1873-5398, Vol. 22, no 1, p. 136-155Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The history of the labouring family has gained increasing attention among European scholars in the last decades, but in Sweden, it remains an under-researched topic. Still, in the early modern period, labourers and their families made vital contributions to the country’s important mining industry. This paper examines the household economy of labouring families related to the mining industry in two Swedish areas in the late seventeenth century. On the basis on account books and court records, combined with demographic data, we explore the diversity of livelihoods and the complex web of interdependencies that made this economy feasible. We show that, while monetary remuneration was limited, wage labour in mines and metalwork gave the labouring family access to resources in the form of land, labour and credit beyond its own assets. Within the household, the man generally worked for wages, while his wife made use of the use-rights that came with his employment. The mining industry, and thereby also Swedish state finances, depended on this diverse family economy. In conclusion, interdependence, rather than the independent economic position described by classical models of early modern households, characterized the household economy of the labouring family.
